A German anti-aircraft gun in a 'fortune mount' (improvised anti-aircraft gun).

A German anti-aircraft gun in a 'fortune mount' (improvised anti-aircraft gun).

A German anti-aircraft gun in a "fortune mount" located in a rectangular moat, made up of four rough concrete walls. The field gun, a 7.7-cm Feldkanone 96 n/A, is fixed on a framework of thick wooden beams, from which hangs the base on which are placed the gunners. This whole assembly rotates 360º on an iron pivot located in the center of a concrete pedestal in the shape of a truncated cone. A staircase, made roughly with bricks, facilitates the access of the crew of the piece to the pit and the gun. This assembly is one more of the hundreds and hundreds of improvised anti-aircraft systems that were used in the Great War, on all fronts and by practically all the contenders.

Notes and Links on Anti-Aircraft Artillery in my other Blogs, especially in ''Armored Cars in the WWI''.

Notes and links on Antiaircraft Artillery in my other Blogs, especially in "Armored Cars in the WWI"

Although my website "Armored Car in the WWI" is obviously a website dedicated to armored cars from the First World War, I have also included armed vehicles from dates before and after that war. I also included the self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, the most powerful mobile weapon used, especially in German hands, during the Great War.

Its double capacity to perform both antiaircraft and ground fire, combined with the antiaircraft self-defense the ability to hit any land target at distances typical of the field artillery and evade by its agile field mobility through any response of the enemy artillery.

This high mobility (in the case of the German K-Flak, with 4 x 4 capacity) and speed, the power and range of their cannons, the optics to precise the shot, the combat experience accumulated by their crews, due to the high percentage of survivability in combat, made it a fearsome weapon. This is evidenced by the tanks destroyed at the hands of the German K-Flak, possibly much more than a hundred from Cambrai to the end of the war.

Inevitably, I also included the "fixed" antiaircraft artillery, which was generally displaced, by means of the hypomobile transport and installed in both fixed and semi-fixed positions. I also included the scarce antiaircraft artillery on railways.

Now on this new website: "Anti-Aircraft Artillery in the WWI" I intend to publish everything related to this issue. That is why I have made the list with their titles and "links" (links), as you will see below, where I collect everything previously published on my main website "Armored Car in the WWI" related to AAA.

From now on I will continue to publish in "Armored Car in the WWI" everything related to armored cars and in "Anti-Aircraft Artillery in the WWI", everything pertaining to the field of anti-aircraft artillery.

Regarding this new website, I would like to tell you that I have not been able to escape the fascination that the study of the multiple and different "fixed" antiaircraft mounts, carried out especially in the first years of the Great War, produces in me. They are the least known and studied of the conflict. Any help or bibliography that you can send me will be welcome.

All belligerent countries (and some neutral), devised, built and used these AA platforms "of fortune". Some were produced in a totally improvised way by the artillerymen appointed to the antiaircraft defense of their own units, infantry divisions destined to the front line of the front, and whose antiaircraft protection, when it existed, normally consisted of two guns and exceptionally four, the assigned guns.

These precarious AA mounts were also used, from the first months of the war, in the defense of airfields, warehouses and Headquarters.

Anti-aircraft mounts of this type were made in 1914 and early 1915, and for the most part they had certain common characteristics but also other unique ones. Subsequently and throughout the year 1915 in all the belligerent countries, officers and artillery chiefs, proposed to the corresponding Departments of the Artillery Weapon or to the General Staffs of the large units, their projects and designs, in order to optimize and standardize the defense anti-aircraft.

Virtually all calibers were used for this mission. From the light 20-mm to the exceptional 150 or 155-mm. Most of the anti-aircraft mounts, both “fortune” and “standard” more or less precarious, were made on the basis of the “standard” medium-caliber field guns of the respective belligerent countries. However, mountain guns were also used, and even mortars and anti-aircraft grenades attached to the rifles. Also the varied, powerful and excellent anti-aircraft guns of the belligerent navies, true forerunners of anti-aircraft artillery on land.

I have counted about a hundred long "fortune and normalized" types of stock. I have used descriptive terms (by the form, by the material used or by the place of origin) to order the AAA of the different countries. All this in order to be able to classify them in a rational and practical way, such as; Trunk base type, Pit base type, Cylindrical base type, Concrete base type, etc ... All types are common to all the different AAA present in the conflict. Another more difficult question is that of the denominations of the "normalized" types.
